Often the first question I ask a new patient is whether or not they eat breakfast in the morning? I gain a lot of information from this question. People who wake up hungry tend to have a healthy metabolism. People who skip breakfast tend to have higher blood pressure and more risk factors for heart disease. They also tend to be on the road to diabetes whether they know it or not.
Research in this area is in its preliminary stages. Early studies back up what I see regularly in my practice—people who don’t eat breakfast are more susceptible to obesity and chronic diseases.
When I meet a patient who routinely skips breakfast, this is usually the first lifestyle change that I suggest. But I don’t just recommend a doughnut and coffee or a bagel and orange juice.
I suggest a high protein breakfast that includes eggs.
Eggs May Be the Perfect Food
I know you’ve heard that eggs are high in cholesterol and therefore bad.
Trust me, this is nonsense.
Eggs are rich in protein, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids that your body needs. Not only are they rich in all these nutrients, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find these nutrients in such a perfect balance. Here are just a few of the benefits that eggs deliver…
Eggs are rich in the eye-friendly antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin.
– A single egg provides 6 grams of protein and 9 essential amino acids.
– Eggs may actually reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.
– Eggs are rich in choline, a nutrient that is essential for good brain and heart health.
– Eggs are rich in vitamin D.
– Eggs are rich in vitamin B12.
In other words, eggs are good for you.
My favorite breakfast is a two-egg omelet with a variety of veggies (try mushrooms and spinach) and a sprinkle of cheese. You can also pair eggs with other meats like a grass fed steak, a small pork chop, or even fish.
The advantages of a high protein breakfast are many.
In one study researchers proved that a high protein breakfast leaves you feeling satisfied longer than a high carbohydrate breakfast. In another study people who began eating breakfast each day lowered their blood pressure to normal levels and reduced their total cholesterol to normal levels.
A high protein breakfast also gives your metabolism a boost. You’ll burn more calories during day-to-day tasks, and you’ll find it easier to lose weight.
The health benefits of a protein-based breakfast are too good to pass up. Start eating breakfast today.
Stay well,
